The Friends, as non-profit organisation relies on funding from members and benefactors to pursue its aims and objectives and fund specific projects.
It is not the intention that the annual membership fee should cover all the costs, but as a token contribution, which will be applied to off-setting some of the administration costs.
Activities of an organisation such as the Friends involved with the preservation, restoration and rehabilitation of railways and other heritage items generally require significant sums of money. These monies in some cases come from central or local government who recognise the benefits of preservation for future generations. In South Africa however there are limited resources and numerous demands placed on the fiscus; accordingly funding must come from other sources.
